The crisis rocking the Rivers State House of Assembly has taken a new dimension with about 26 lawmakers suspending the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaehwule and elected the earlier suspended leader of the House, Edison Ehie, as the new Speaker.

The development followed an earlier attempt by the lawmakers to commence an impeach process on Governor Siminalayi Fubara which led to commotion at the Assembly complex in the early hours of Monday.

The commotion led to the cordoning off of the premises by fully armed security personnel.

Addressing journalists after a brief plenary at a chamber within the Government House, Port Harcourt, the new speaker, Ehie, promised to ensure justice and fairness to all in the state.

He said, "The House just rose from plenary and with all humility I must thank my colleagues, 26 Assembly Members, who have just elected me as the new Speaker of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly.

"My commitment to Rivers people is that I will be just and fair to all and sundry. And I will ensure that the rule of law takes its course. I will not betray my colleagues and Rivers people and I will not betray my constituency.

"I will also ensure the independence of the Rivers State House of Assembly is adhered to, with mutual respect to the judiciary and executive arms.

"Everything due my colleagues as honourable members, constitutionally will be given to them. The honourable members that have been suspended will also be given fair hearing.

"The committee of information will publish the names of those suspended. The House has also urged the Committee on petitions to give them fair hearing.

"The house has adjourned sine dine because the Parliamentary Association of Nigeria has served us a notice of indefinite strike from Abuja. So we cannot sit again. It means any sitting can't hold water. The court is there, if you are aggrieved you should approach the court."

Governor Fubara earlier on Monday was seen entering the Assembly in the midst of teargas being fired by the security operatives.

The Governor has accussed security operatives of firing directly at him.

Earlier, Ehien, was pronounced suspended by lawmakers who has earlier sit at the Assembly.

The Assembly complex was under attack on Sunday evening with a bang suspected to be detonation of bomb within the complex.

part of the Assembly complex was burnt by the bang.

The governor condemned the earlier sitting of some of the lawmakers within the complex after the attack on Sunday.
