2015 Maiduguri attacks: Court sentences Boko Haram member to death by hanging
The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced a member of the Boko Haram terrorist group, Alkali Yarima, also known as La'ari, to death by hanging for his role in the 2015 attacks on Maiduguri.
Delivering judgment on Friday, Justice James Omotosho found Yarima guilty on a seven-count terrorism charge filed by the Federal Government and imposed multiple prison terms in addition to the death sentence.
The court sentenced the convict to 35 years' imprisonment on count one for professing membership and remaining a member of the proscribed Boko Haram terrorist organisation between 2009 and 2015.
Prosecutors told the court that Yarima accepted the "Da'awah" of the group's founder, Mohammed Yusuf, an offence punishable under the Terrorism (Prevention Amendment) Act, 2013.
Justice Omotosho also sentenced Yarima to life imprisonment on count six for receiving training in arms and weapon handling in preparation for acts of terrorism after travelling to an Arab country for the training.
The court further imposed a 30-year jail term on count five and sentenced the convict to 10 years' imprisonment each on counts two, three and four.
The death sentence was handed down on count seven for participating in terrorist attacks on Maiduguri.
The Federal Government arraigned Yarima in charge No. FHC/KNJ/CR/971/2026, dated May 26 and filed on May 29 by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo.
Although terrorism trials are usually conducted in Kainji, the case was transferred to the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Reacting after the judgment, the Lateef Fagbemi, who led the prosecution team, reaffirmed the Federal Government's resolve to combat terrorism.
"We will fight with every inch of our blood to ensure that we make Nigeria a safe place for everybody," the Attorney General said.
