No fewer than 10 persons have been confirmed dead while two others sustained injuries in an early morning fatal crash which occurred on Saturday at the Oniworo Area of the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway.
The accident, according to Ogun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, involved two vehicles; a Toyota Haice bus with registration numbers KLD 539 XA and a Mack container truck with no registration number.
Commander Florence Okpe, the FRSC Public Education Officer, in a statement issued on Saturday said the crash was as a result of road obstruction on the part of the truck and excessive speed on the part of the bus.
Okpe said the Toyota bus, due to the excessive speed, lost control and ran into the obstructing truck from the rear.
“The fatal crash occurred at the early hours this morning at about 0430hrs on Lagos-Ibadan expressway around Oniworo Area.
“A total of 19 persons were involved in the crash which comprised of 13 male adult and 06 female adult.
“Two persons sustained injuries; two male adults, and 10 died; Seven male adult, two females and one female child, while the remaining persons were unhurt.
“Two vehicles were involved, a Toyota Haice bus with registration number KLD 539 XA and a Mack container truck, with no registration number on it.
“The suspected causes of the crash were road obstruction on the part of the truck and excessive speed on the Toyota bus which led to lose of control and ran into the truck at the rear.”
According to the Spokesperson, the injured victims were taken to a hospital in Ogere for medical attention while the corpses were deposited at Ipara morgue.
She said the Sector Commander FRSC Ogun Sector feel pained on failure of some motorists to obey simple rules, while encouraging drivers to use their headlamp due to poor visibility occasioned by the harmattan season.
The Sector Commander also cautioned motorists especially the truck drivers on non-display of caution signs whenever there is breakdown on the road.
“The Sector Commander, FRSC Ogun Sector, feel pained on some simple rules refuse to be obeyed by motorists. He also emphasizes on poor visibility due to harmattan haze and that motorists should put on the head lamp when the weather is poor.
“He cautions motorists especially the truck drivers for non-display of caution signs whenever there is breakdown on the road.
“The Sector Commander FRSC Ogun Sector Command Commiserated with the family of the crash victims and ask them to contact FRSC, Ogunmakin for more information about the crash.”
